Before Rollins, Sofia Filippa served as a research assistant at Ibis Reproductive Health, a reproductive and sexual health research non-profit. Her work focused on collaborating on a variety of research projects with a safe abortion hotline in Argentina that provides support and information on self-managed medication abortion. Filippa is from Argentina, so this project was especially meaningful for her.
Filippa’s passion for improving access to abortion has only grown during her MPH. She has helped conduct a study on the barriers and facilitators for medication abortion access for Black and Latinx people with SisterLove, an Atlanta reproductive justice organization. Filippa also serves as the Co-President of the Emory Reproductive Health Association. Finally, she is currently working on a thesis exploring the association between feelings of preparedness and certainty of medication abortion outcomes, and she may be interested in continuing this research through a PhD.
Even though Filippa has a very defined interest, she suggests keeping an open mind and challenging yourself to learn beyond your passion area. She particularly recommends the MCH Seminar to increase exposure to other MCH areas and establish community. As she puts it, “Your peers will likely be your colleagues when you leave so try to build connections and friendships.”
